We embed English and writing accross the curriculum, to ensure we have quality wiritng at all times.
At Tickford Park Primary School we aim to foster a love a writing across the school. In Foundation Stage, we support the development of the gross and fine motor skills that children need for writing through the Write Dance approach and we teach letter formation in phonics lessons. We utilise role play and writing events in Foundation Stage to promote creativity and imagination and we provide regular writing opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. The children in Foundation Stage showcase their writing in their weekly ‘Big Writes’.
In Key Stage One and Two, children are supported in their writing by exploring the same high-quality text in both their Writing and Reading lessons. In most cases, this will be one text per half term. (Please see the core text overview from the link above) By studying each text simultaneously across Writing and Reading lessons, the children have regular opportunities to immerse themselves in the text and develop their understanding.
At Tickford Park Primary School, children have daily Writing lessons which are taught in three-week units. Each unit supports the acquisition of new skills and knowledge, including grammar and punctuation skills. In the first unit of each half term, children will explore novels; the second unit will cover non-fiction or poetry. To conclude each unit, children will have the opportunity to apply their learning in a 'Big Write', which is an independent, extended piece of writing.
